VERDICT: The indie/alt-goth (Ha! Labels, eh?) revival continues!
You'll like this if you like: The Jesus And Mary Chain; Black Rebel Motorcycle Club; Primal Scream
Featuring former Jesus And Mary Chain upstarts Jim Reid and Ben Lurie, along with former Gun Club bassist Romi Mori and former Earl Brutus frontman Nick Sanderson on drums, Freeheat are the closest thing to a Jesus And Mary Chain revivalist show this side of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
"The Two Of Us" and "Facing Up To The Facts" are pure JAMC, the former recalling the melodic, summery pop side of Reid and Lurie’s previous outfit, the latter veering to the dark, nihilistic side that made their live shows so compelling. Slowing (and calming) things down a bit, "Shine On" is reminiscent of the much-missed London-based underground pop faves The Surfing Brides, while "The Long Goodbye" sees Reid in introspective mode, accompanied by acoustic guitar and piano. Rounding out the EP, "Nobody’s Gonna Trip My Wire" merely serves to prove that anything Bobby Gillespie (or Noel Gallagher for that matter) can do, Jim Reid and Freeheat can do ten times as well.
