Spider-Man crushes the competition with an astonishing $114 million opening weekend.
Spider-Man has entered the record books as the first movie to take over $100 million in its opening weekend, with an amazing $114 million (and even that's reckoned to be a conservative estimate, according to experts). The previous record holder, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, took around $90 million in its first weekend.
The popularity of Spider-Man clearly hit all the other movies currently on release -- number two in the charts was The Scorpion King, which only managed to take $9.6 million, and number three was Changing Lanes which snagged $5.6 million.
The only other two new movies in this week's top 10 were the critically panned Deuces Wild, entering at number 7 with $2.7 million, and Woody Allen's Hollywood Ending, at number 10 with $2 million.
