US movie box office chart
20th May 2002
Despite its flaws (and there are way too many to list), Star Wars Episode II unsurprisingly shot to the top of the charts this weekend, taking in an estimated $86 million.

Because it opened on Thursday, the film has taken a total of $116 million so far. Spider-Man took the number two slot with a still impressive $46 million, and the only film to risk opening against Star Wars, About A Boy, came in at number four with $8.6 million.

Here's how the chart looks for the weekend of May 17-19. Figures are in millions, and the total gross is in brackets.

  1. Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones $86 ($116)

  2. Spider-Man $46 ($287)

  3. Unfaithful $10 ($30)

  4. About A Boy $8.4 ($8.4)

  5. The New Guy $7 ($17)

  6. Changing Lanes $3.1 ($62)

  7. The Scorpion King $3 ($85)

  8. The Rookie $2 ($71)

  9. Murder By Numbers $2 ($30)

  10. My Big Fat Greek Wedding $1 ($6)
